Athletes hit by lack of funds
THREE Bahraini disabled athletes are hoping to clinch top medals at an international wheelchair marathon in Japan later this month. Riyadh Al Marzooq, Abdul Amer Al Aradi and Sayed Noor Al Widae have intensified their training during Ramadan to ensure they will be in top form when they compete at the 26th Oita International Wheelchair Marathon on October 29. "During Ramadan everyone is fasting but still they are training hard because they want to win the marathon," said Bahrain Mobility International (BMI) vice-president and coach Adel Sultan. "They want to make Bahrain proud by joining the other 600 athletes from around the world and beating them. "Bahrain is now a developed country and we want to show this to the world." The only snag facing the athletes is they need to raise at least BD2,800 for airfare and accommodation for themselves and two coaches, Mr Sultan and Abbas Salah, who are required to assist them.
