Border jumper finds it hard to melt into Arctic

It must have seemed like the perfect plan for a man desperate to bust into Canada: fly to Greenland, buy a boat and sneak into the country as far from the nearest immigration official as possible: the Arctic hinterland.

From there he would buy a plane ticket and escape unnoticed to Toronto to be with his family.

But the plan failed miserably for a 32-year-old Romanian, who shocked residents of Canada's northernmost community when he pulled up in his 18-foot fibreglass boat this Monday.

It's hard to slip under the radar in a tightly-knit community of less than 200, and as the Romanian emerged from a thick fog onto the shores of Grise Fiord, he was met by a welcoming party of curious Inuit. Wet from the journey, with no food and only 20 litres of fuel remaining, the Romanian was nonetheless freshly shaved and eager to sell his boat to raise money for his airfare south.

Black travel clubs provide camaraderie and counsel

Before buying plane tickets, booking hotels or checking out guidebooks, many African-Americans are turning to a source close to home to inspire their travel planning: each other.

More precisely, they are seeking out travel clubs run by and for blacks. After a post-9/11 drop-off, organizations and gatherings promoting travel opportunities for blacks are reporting increased interest. .

Trip to Italy teaches economics

Campus organizations, such as sororities, fraternities and Baptist Collegiate Ministries, have frequently arranged spring break trips, but now one academic department is making plans as well.

The business department is taking a group of students to Italy to learn about global economics.

Students and faculty going on the trip will depart for Italy on March 8. They will spend the next eight days traveling around Italy before returning home on March 17.

The cost for the trip is $1999. This includes airfare, ground transportation, lodging, some meals and tours. A $500 deposit is require to reserve plane tickets and lodging. The full balance is due by Jan. 11.

The trip will provide credit for a special topics course for the spring semester.

Deportee’s bold bid to sneak back thwarted

The 32-year-old mans plan was to sneak into the country by using a boat from Greenland to cross the icy and choppy Baffin Bay, then land in the Arctic hinterlands of Grise Fiordas far from the nearest immigration official as possible.

From there, he planned to buy a plane ticket and escape unnoticed to Toronto to be with his family.

But RCMP say the plan failed miserably because its hard to slip under the radar in a tightly-knit community of fewer than 200 people.

Instead, the Romanian was met by a welcoming party of curious Inuit when he pulled up in his six-metre-long fibreglass boat on Monday.

He was wet from the journey, had no food, and was down to his last 20 litres of fuel.
