Token dinner will erase social debt

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My husband's bachelor habit was to accept invitations to other people's homes, yet never invite those people to dinner at his home. Did I acquire all of his social debt when we married?

Now, most of it is good debt, to people with good character. However, there is also bad debt to a certain couple. It's not a matter of personality, but of character. They were open adulterers at one point, and they have always been gossips.

Going forward, he's agreed with me that "we" don't have to condone their kind of behavior by socializing with them.

But what about the past social debt? Does it ever expire? If it doesn't, is there any way to minimize the pain with this gossipy couple? Can one dinner in my home pay off, say, five in their home from the past three years?

Gentle Reader: The situation is worse than you thought.

DRI uncovers anabolic steroid scam

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has unearthed a scam involving trafficking and sale of anabolic steroids in the country.

In a major clampdown on illegal importers of performance-enhancing drugs, DRI conducted a series of nationwide raids and took 12 people from various states into custody for questioning.

Smuggled steroids include neurobol, testosterone propionate, stanozolol, anabol and decabalon used extensively by athletes and weight lifters in professional tournaments.
A DRI source said certain parties were importing anabolic steroids under the guise of life-saving drugs that are exempt from Customs duty and contra-veiling Duty (CVD) based on the maximum retail price (MRP) leviable on the drugs. By resorting to this practice, importers have evaded paying duty to the tune of 66 percent, said the source.

Onco Detectors International Announces New Blood Test for ...

BETHESDA, MD -- August 28, 2006 -- Onco Detectors International, announced the release of a new blood test for detecting cancer.

Researchers found Migration Inhibitory Factor (MIF) to be present at higher levels in the blood of people with some cancers. Onco Detectors developed the "MIF Assay kit" which will be used by laboratories for detecting high levels of MIF in blood serum. The test may be used alone or in combination with other diagnostic tests to provide greater certainty in the diagnosis of cancer. The test is currently registered for research use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Elliot A. Segal, President of Onco Detectors, stated that, "MIF Assay will provide greater sensitivity and specificity to current testing standards, potentially providing the opportunity to improve patient care."

More research is being done to determine the utility of MIF as a help to clinicians in diagnosing and monitoring treatment.
