Arthritis Forum gives much-needed info

Brenda Stubbs knows all about arthritis, how serious it is, the pain it causes, how it can keep a person from working and enjoying life. She's had rheumatoid arthritis for years now.

That's why she took it upon herself to organize an annual Arthritis Forum to give people much-needed information about the disease, but sadly, this will be the last one - her condition has worsened from the stress of this undertaking.

Stubbs, chairperson of the Surrey Community Group, a support group for people suffering from arthritis, has arranged for Dr. Alice Klinkhoff to speak at this year's forum.

Klinkhoff is a rheumatologist, a doctor who specializes in treating arthritis, and she will discuss the various kind of arthritis, and how to deal with it, as well as when to see a specialist.

Health Connections for National Pain Awareness Month

It's quite common for us to have comorbid health conditions. Comorbid conditions are conditions that tend to occur together, but neither causes the other. Many of you who read my site don't always feel up to "surfing the Web" because of your headaches or Migraines, so in Health Connections, put together links to content on other About Health sites regarding issues that may be of interest to you. Since this is Pain Awareness Month here are some relevant articles. Ready, set, surf... September is National Pain Awareness Month

September is National Arthritis Month in Canada - a month devoted to promoting awareness about arthritis.

CNS Could Regulate Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis drugs work better, at least in arthritic rats, when delivered into the central nervous system, Gary Firestein and colleagues (University of California San Diego) now report in the international open-access medical journal PLoS Medicine.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a disease marked by chronic inflammation, leading to joint pain and destruction. Pain and inflammation in the joints are constantly monitored by the central nervous system (CNS, i.e. the brain and spinal cord). Scientists have long suspected that the CNS can regulate inflammation and immune responses in the body's "periphery", but little is known about how this works. Firestein and colleagues focused on a protein called p38, which is involved in a number of cellular processes critical to the development of RA.
