| Atlas Trophy up for grabs in Vicksburg
There will be a new champion crowned Sunday afternoon when the Greater Kalamazoo Golf Association's Fall Medal Tournament concludes at The Moors Golf Club. That's because defending champion John Barry will be playing in Vicksburg at Angels Crossing Golf Club in the Golf Association of Michigan's 62nd renewal of the Atlas Trophy Matches. Barry, along with fellow Moors members Adam Anderson and Mitch Wilson, will be a part of the 12-person team comprised of golfers from private clubs around Michigan. They will vie for the Atlas Trophy against a 12-member team representing public courses in a Ryder Cup-like format. The matches will feature alternate-shot foursomes Saturday morning, followed by four-ball matches Saturday afternoon. The event concludes with singles match play Sunday.
Penn Manor team captures 11 gold medals
LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - When Russ McDonnell loaded up the van and took his Penn Manor powerlifting team to the AAU Junior Olympic Games earlier this summer, he was hoping for the best for his athletes. Turns out those athletes turned in some of the best performances in the country. Competing at Norcum High School in Newport News, Va., July 29-30, Penn Manors powerlifters pumping iron in the squat, bench and deadlift won 11 gold medals, broke five national records, collected 120 team points, and finished second in the team competition. Six girls and five boys took first place in their respective divisions. Did I expect them to do well? Yes, said McDonnell, Penn Manors strength and conditioning coach, who started the powerlifting club team in 2002.
