THE LION KING HEADS FOR SOUTH AFRICA

Hit musical THE LION KING is going back to its roots after landing a new home in Johannesburg, South Africa. The African-themed show, which has smashed theatre records around the world, will open in Johannesburg next June (07). The production will feature a local South African cast, many of whom have been in other productions of The Lion King around the world. According to theatre website broadwayworld.com, The Lion King has employed almost 100 native South African actors in its productions worldwide. A new venue, the Montecasino Theatre, is being built especially for the Disney production. Disney Theatrical Productions president THOMAS SCHUMACHER says, "We have always dreamed of producing our show in South Africa. The music, the culture, and the spirit of the country are an integral part of The Lion King and opening this production brings us full circle."

Hunterdon fair finds new home

Pig racing and competitions for needlework and quilts also are back on the agenda, as well as a goat-milking contest, bike rodeo and horseless horse contest.

More serious will be the 4-H competitions for best goats, sheep, dogs, horses, cows, rabbits and poultry.

The fair moved this year after the fairgrounds in Flemington were sold for development of a shopping mall. The new county-owned fairgrounds are at South County Park off Routes 31 and 179, just south of Ringoes.

The fair runs Wednesday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. until closing at 6 p.m. Ad mission is free; parking costs $5 per vehicle, which partially benefits the local fire companies that supervise parking. Tickets for amusement rides are available. For more information, a schedule of events or show rules check the Web site (www.co.hunterdon.nj.us/4hagfair) or call the fair office at (908) 782-6809.

Scooters, bikes gaining in popularity to save gas

PARAGOULD - A rise in the sales of scooters seems to echo the rise in fuel prices, according to a local dealership.David Hess and Matt Tripod, parts advisors for Hogland's Yamaha-Honda in Paragould, said scooter business has picked up among people of all ages. They also said some people are buying scooters for their teens to ride to school.According to Hess, a 50cc scooter can get about 100 miles per gallon. A 125cc scooter can get about 70-80 mpg. With current prices fluctuating upwards of $2.40 a gallon, such high mileage can mean big savings in money and fuel. For those concerned about the environment, a side effect of less gas use could be less air pollution. Easier maintenance can be another incentive to riding a scooter.Modern motorcycles and scooters are made with lighter materials and more advanced technology.
