Answering the $200,000 question

At best, the way the two members of the Public Service Commission spent more than $200,000 from their campaign coffers looks questionable. At worst, the longtime PSC commissioners may have broken state law.

Their campaign contributions went to relatives, grocery stores, electronics stores, gas stations, car dealerships, credit cards and themselves, according to a Sunday story in the Mobile Press-Register. It's no wonder the attorney general's office said it is evaluating the newspaper's findings. And it must. The Press-Register reported:

Sullivan since 2000 has spent more than $115,000 of his campaign funds - including a single payment of almost $44,000 - at car dealerships. He also has reimbursed about $60,000 to himself during that time with no explanation of how the money was spent.

After 23 years, food bank celebrates new home

The Rim Country has had the services of a food bank since 1983. Now, after 23 years, the food bank has a home of its own.

A grand opening celebration is planned for the food bank's new home at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9. The Rim Country Food Bank is located 511 S. St. Phillips St. in Payson, at the northwest corner of the property of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church.

The food bank was started by the Telephone Pioneers organization and was open once a month. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Philip's took over the service in 1994 and now has the food bank open three times a week.

The food bank made use of some extra space at St. Philip's for a number of years, but as the need for the service grew, so did the need for more space.

"The old one was way too small," said Bob Closs, co-president of the society with Richard Krause.

AFS Trinity Plug-in Drivetrain -250MPG

SEATTLE, WA, September 14, 2006; A new patent application filed today by AFS Trinity Power Corporation could make paying more to own a hybrid car a thing of the past, according to AFS Trinity Power Corporation CEO Edward W. Furia.

Furia said, "Mileage savings obtained from driving conventional hybrids are not large enough to offset their higher purchase prices that are linked to their expensive battery packs. Battery cost becomes even more important for plug-in hybrids. By providing much higher mileage and using low-cost batteries, AFS Trinity expects its Extreme Hybrid™ drive train to make possible the first money-saving hybrid vehicles of any kind. Drivers should expect the Extreme Hybrid™ to pay for itself in five years or less depending on your driving habits and the future price of gasoline."

"Today's patent filing addresses the architecture, power electronics and control strategies of the Extreme Hybrid™ (XH™) drive train.
