At the hands of Nokia’s Wibree, could Bluetooth be on the ropes?

Not only that, their hand could be forced should Nokia start to eschew Bluetooth in favor of Wibree in its handsets. If for example, Nokia's handsets start interoperating with other consumer devices (like wristwatches) that Bluetooth has yet to find its way into (thereby forming a vibrant Wibree ecosystem), Nokia's competitors could be left with that "if you can't be 'em, join em" choice. Because of the constraints on battery life, going with that choice could force them to dump Bluetooth.

Wow Nokia. Game face on.

Deserter will not be charged, lawyer says

Army deserter Darrell Anderson was released from Fort Knox yesterday, and after a brief stop at home in Lexington planned to travel to Tennessee to seek treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Anita Anderson said by cell phone that she picked up her son at the military post shortly before noon yesterday, and that they were on their way to a Tennessee treatment facility where Darrell Anderson could stay for a few weeks or months. She said he had been "treated very very well" while in Army custody.

Darrell Anderson's attorney, Jim Fennerty, said the Army had decided not to court-martial his client and had elected to give him an "other-than-honorable" discharge instead -- even though Anderson deserted to Canada and publicly criticized U.S. policy in Iraq. Fennerty said Anderson expects to get his discharge papers by mail within a few days, but he had no other immediate details.

Bluebot Pushes Ads To Your Cell Phone

Here's an idea that I would probably use a lot. A group of German students have developed a new Java program that will automatically update to your cell phone every time you enter a particular Bluetooth hotspot. What does it update, you ask? Right now, it's the menu in the cafeterias at Dresden Technical University. When you walk through the Central Mess Hall, all 15 menus (or just the ones of your choosing) will be updated up to two weeks in advance. They're calling the hardware Bluebot, and I can imagine this really taking off for advertisers. Think walking down 5th Avenue in New York while advertisements just start popping up on your phone.

Edit: When Bluetooth was originally explained to me years ago, this was how it was presented. Being able to go to an airport and having all your flight times automatically coordinated to you.
