From the tummy tuck to liposuction to the nip and tuck, many cosmetic surgical procedures are available locally. But while these are freely available in the west, the practice locally is shrouded in mystery. What do Kenyans think? A doctor at a private clinic in Nairobi says the facility serves 10 clients a day with a six-month waiting list! Whats more, each client spends more than a quarter of a million shillings in pursuit of artificial beauty. Aesthetic surgery, commonly known as cosmetic surgery, and which is quite common in the West, is taken lightly here. According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) website, one out of three women in the United Kingdom has considered going under a surgeons knife to transform herself into an artificial beauty. For many Kenyan women, beauty as we know it, is, to a large measure, a foreign concept.

IN MY OPINION: Too-thin debate is back in fashion
Wallis Simpson, the American-born Duchess of Windsor, famously said, "You can never be too rich or too thin." If she were alive today, she might change her mind -- about the last part, anyway. The current debate -- about whether runway models have taken their role as hangers for clothing designers too far -- is not new. It's the coming back around of a cycle. A few years ago the target was "heroin chic." Designers were attacked for using kohl-eyed, pale-skinned mannequins who looked more ready for rehab than a close-up. The latest round of introspection started when organizers of Madrid Fashion Week and the Madrid regional government banned models with thighs as round as most people's wrists. Now the cautious conversation has reached New York, Paris and Milan, the fashion troika.
FREE SKIN CANCER SCREENING
PALM SPRINGS, CA - (September 5, 2006) The Laser Center at Contour Dermatology is holding a free Skin Cancer Screening Day on Friday, Sept. 8, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Reservations are required. Approximately 40 patients will be able to be seen throughout the screening day. "It's imperative for people to understand the importance of visiting their dermatologist's office for annual skin cancer screenings," commented Woo-Gallagher.
