Panic in the skies

When examining historic processes in hindsight, one can usually point to a specific incident that people failed to notice, but that in hindsight gains significance.

For the past two weeks of summer, while the whole of Europe is taking its vacation, there have been clear signs of panic in the air. Could this be such a point in case?

Several days ago, on a flight from London to Washington, a woman took out a small container of hand cream from her purse. She was immediately attacked by a group of stewards, who tied her hands and declared an emergency situation. The plane made an emergency landing in Boston and complaints by passengers, enraged family members and airline employees went unheeded.

Monday, a group of British passengers staged a revolt on their flight home from a holiday in Spain, and refused to allow the plane to take off because of "two Middle Eastern-looking passengers speaking in what sounded like Arabic and who couldn't stop looking at their watches." The airline was forced to remove the men from the aircraft causing a significant delay.

Trend-Setting Wave House(R) to Host the Royal Caribbean Zero to Hero Surf Series National Championship

It's the battle of the boardriders as California hot spot Wave House hosts the Royal Caribbean Zero to Hero Surf Series National Championship in San Diego on Saturday, September 23. The two overall winners will receive a seven-night Royal Caribbean cruise vacation and once-in-a lifetime opportunity to ride with action sports' biggest stars, including the Pipeline Masters Champion, Jamie O'Brien; five-time X-Games Gold Medal winner, Andy MacDonald; and 2006 Olympic Snowboarder Andy Finch, and more.

Zero to Hero is a national surf series circuit consisting of 16 city tour stops, where flowboarders and bodyboarders compete for a chance to enter the finals at Wave House in San Diego. Local "heroes" from all over the nation including Texas, Virginia, Hawaii, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio, Florida and Missouri will compete to become the national flowboarding hero.

A return trip, of sorts

Kittrell and Monique White shared a "just the two of us" dinner of fajitas and margaritas at their favorite Mexican place Tuesday night.

Then relatives, neighbors and churchmates gathered for a second bon voyage feast at the couple's Temecula home, hours before his Navy ship would carry Kittrell, a petty officer second class, away again to war.

"Everybody came over, everybody in the neighborhood," Monique White said, tears rolling down her cheeks. "We joked around and we prayed a lot – but the kids were sad."

Kittrell's ship, the amphibious assault ship Boxer, led a six-ship convoy out of the 32nd Street Naval Station yesterday morning on a six-month cruise that will take it to the Persian Gulf, said Lt. Paul Macapagal, a Navy spokesman.

The Boxer will be the flagship of Expeditionary Strike Group 5, which also will include the San Diego-based amphibious ships Dubuque and Coronado, the destroyers Benfold and Howard, and the cruiser Bunker Hill.
