If you go: Beaufort, S.C. ("Byoo-fert")

Getting there: I flew Delta to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (with a change in Atlanta) and then rented a car for the 45-mile drive to Beaufort. If you drive, it will take you about nine or 10 hours from Fort Lauderdale.

Getting around: The town is very walkable, but you'll need a car to explore the nearby islands.

Lodging: There are a number of attractive inns and B&Bs. I liked The Old Point Inn (212 New St.) not just for the dog, but the friendly owners, the delicious breakfasts, the afternoon wine, and the feeling of being a part of the most gracious part of town. Neighborhood strolls, especially before sunset, are highly recommended. Rates range from $95 to $150. 843-524-3177; www.oldpointinn.com; e-mail: oldpointinn@yahoo.com.

Another popular place is the Rhett House Inn, 1009 Craven St., 843-524-9030, www.rhetthouseinn.com.
