A consignment of Fresian horses was symbolically off loaded at Cape Town's Victoria and Alfred Waterfront to mark the arrival of draught horses in South Africa a century ago, the SABC reported on Saturday.

This year the sixth annual Draught Horse Festival coincided with the historical arrival of European Fresian horses in Cape Town in 1906.

In a symbolic ceremony, the Fresians were harnessed in the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre followed by a parade of 15 horses and carts from The Cart Horse Protection Association.

The festival celebrates the contribution of draught horses to the SA's economy.

Even today, horse and carts remain an integral part of life in The Mother City and were originally used to 'smous' (peddle) snoek, fruit and vegetables in the city suburbs.
