Drop in for help over job search

AN EVENT is being held in Atherstone next month for people who are feeling baffled or disillusioned in their search for work.

Volunteer Centre North Warwickshire has gathered together experts from all kinds of job-related fields for a one-off drop-in day, where people who've been out of work for some time can get advice to help them into work.

Centre manager Jane White said: "It seems that people can quite often end up feeling as if they're just a number in some big efficient system, and that they feel the need to sit down and simply get some friendly old-fashioned one-to-one tailored personal advice.

"We think that in many cases, especially where people have been out of work for some time, learning some extra skills or getting into some sort of voluntary work might well prove a valuable step in getting back into a full-time job."

Organisations taking part include the centre itself, the Jobcentre, the local college, the Learning Consortium, People Into Employment, Millennium Volunteers, Connexions, and North Warwickshire Council for Voluntary Service.

Stay Through Nov. 7 or Go? Election Officials' Fate Debated

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Many have called for the firing of election officials in Montgomery County after last week's primary election fiasco. But one county official says looking for new election officials now would be a mistake.

Montgomery County Council President George Leventhal had been one of those calling for the resignation of Board of Elections President Nancy Dacek and Board of Elections Director Margaret Jurgenson.

Leventhal says he stands by his call to replace the leadership, but not now.

Attempting to launch a job search at the same as fixing the problems is not timely, he says.

"The current leadership may need to stay in place through Nov. 7," Leventhal says.

Even if the November election goes smoothly, Leventhal says "there has to be accountability."

"I stand by my view that the current leadership has to be replaced," he says.

K-9 Search and Rescue team visits THS

On Sept. 13, Tehachapi High School criminal justice students were treated to a demonstration by Captain Steve Pendergrass of Technical Rescue and Emergency Medical Services for the Kern County Fire Department and his Search and Rescue K-9 partner, Marc. The class’ instructor, former Vice Detective Dennis Sterk, retired from the Kern County Sheriff’s Department in March of 2004, and he is now offering students an inside look at the many jobs and requirements necessary to pursue a career in law enforcement and the vast criminal justice system. "It’s my position to introduce them to all of the different types of careers in criminal justice and to explain how they need to prepare," Sterk said.In an effort to demonstrate the wide variety of jobs related to the field, Pendergrass put on a demonstration with his K-9 partner, Marc, who was trained by the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (NDSDF) before being donated to the KCFD.

Job seekers: Know thy interviewer

A recent survey of corporate executives reveals that one of their biggest beefs is that too few applicants know enough about the company with which they are interviewing.

Forty-seven percent of executives polled said that having little or no knowledge of the company is the most common mistake job seekers make during interviews, according to survey results released by Accountemps, a specialty staffing company with offices in White Plains.

Candidates should learn as much as they can about a company before meeting with a prospective employer, says Louise Fletcher, president of Blue Sky Resumes in Bronxville.

"Imagine trying to market a product without understanding the needs of your audience?" Fletcher says.

Armed with some knowledge about the company, job seekers are in better position to sell their talents and usefulness, she says.
